GREATMAN TAKIT

The Story

Before the melodies, there were desks, radio songs, choir rehearsals and rap verses.

Eleven chapters, from a Lagos childhood to a twenty-three track album. The through-line has never moved.

01THE BEGINNING

Lagos

Born in Lagos, into a ministry family. Music was not a career being planned for him — it was simply the sound the house made.

Church was the first venue. It usually is.

02GROWING UP

Abuja

Abuja is where the influences started arguing with each other. Radio on one side, hip-hop on the other, choir rehearsal in the middle, drama somewhere in between.

Freestyling came first as a game between friends. It stopped being a game fairly quickly.

03UNIVERSITY

Minna

University in Minna, and a rap crew that took itself seriously enough to get better.

This is the stretch where craft gets built — unglamorous, repetitive, necessary.

WildFire

The earliest album in the catalogue. Nine tracks, rap-led, released in October 2016.

It set the terms that still hold: humour and conviction in the same bar, and no interest in choosing between them.

05THE COLLECTIVE

The Gratitude

Time inside a group — writing with other people, arranging around other voices, learning what a collective can do that a solo artist cannot.

Also learning what it costs.

06THE REBUILD

Solo Again

Leaving a group means rebuilding an identity in public, which is slower and less forgiving than building one the first time.

The catalogue that follows is the record of that rebuild.

Energy

Subtitled Afropop Gospel Vol. 1 — a title that reads like a genre argument and is meant to.

Seven songs where melody takes the lead and the subject never moves. Limoblaze turns up on Bulie.

Commando

A joint project with Ko'rale, released on Obban Records. The remix brought in Tee Supreme and Naffymar.

Confirmation that the rap side of the catalogue was never a phase to be grown out of.

Worship SZN

Eight songs, over an hour, most of them past the seven-minute mark. Prospa Ochimana, Grace Nelson and Moses Bliss all pass through.

Made to be sat inside rather than skipped through — which is a difficult thing to ask of a listener, and the point.

Ghetto Gospel

Eight tracks built end to end with GospelOnDeBeatz. Faith carried out of the sanctuary and set down where people actually live.

Danceable, direct, and unbothered about which shelf it gets filed under.

Flames Of A Wildfire

Ten years after WildFire, twenty-three tracks that move between rap, worship and Afropop without asking permission.

Nathaniel Bassey and Lawrence Oyor in the same tracklist as Limoblaze and Prinx Emmanuel. It holds together because the subject never changes.

This is the current chapter. It is not the last one.
